An Excerpt from She Ruined Our Lives

An Excerpt from She Ruined Our Lives

For anybody interested in my latest novel, I’m reprinting a brief excerpt from the opening scene of She Ruined Our Lives:

Layla Dolak stopped loving her younger sister Erika three months earlier, on a humid summer day. Perhaps that was not entirely accurate. It was possible that underneath all of the burning anger and searing resentment some remnants of filial affection still remained. If this was the case, however, Layla was unaware of it. As far as Layla knew, all warm emotions she once felt towards Erika had been severed that sticky August afternoon, when she

had taken a nap between shifts at Grobel’s Tavern.

Looking back, Layla realized that she should have been warier when her sister had offered her a cookie. Erika wasn’t much of one for cooking at all, let alone baking, so Layla ought to have been suspicious. But she was both tired and hungry, so she’d gratefully devoured the cookie without thinking about the incongruity of it. It was not a particularly tasty cookie. The batter was clearly that of a prepackaged plastic-wrapped tube from a supermarket cooler, and there was a slightly medicinal taste that she didn’t detect until a

few moments after swallowing the last morsel. Normally, she might have asked questions, but she was dead on her feet, so she washed away the crumbs with a few sips of milk and collapsed on her left side upon the living room couch. She rapidly fell into a much deeper slumber than usual and stayed in dreamland for over two hours. Her usual naps lasted forty minutes on average, depending on how well she’d rested the previous night.

While Layla slept, Erika had silently tiptoed behind the sofa, gently graspedLayla’s silky tresses with her left hand, and, gripping a large  pair of scissors in her right hand, chopped off nearly twenty-six inches in a series of careful snips. Had she simply gathered up her sister’s locks into a ponytail and severed them, leaving Layla with a ragged bob, Layla would have been enraged, but not filled with searing hate. But Erika sought to profit as much as possible from her sister’s hair, and every fraction of an inch left attached to Layla’s scalp was money Erika was denying her own pockets, so

she ruthlessly brought the scissor blades as close to Layla’s skull as possible, tying up every flowing length of hair with a rubber band and carefully bagging them. In about fifteen minutes’ time, she had clipped away every lock of Layla’s thick mane, leaving the barest possible covering of peach fuzz over her head.

Erika had then rushed from the house without waking Layla, hurried

downtown to a shop that purchased human hair, and after a little negotiating and flirting with the clerk to drive up the price, accepted six hundred ten dollars for her sister’s tresses. The proprietor had originally presented a lowball offer of four hundred dollars, but Layla had done her research, and she knew the going rates for a particularly thick skein of glossy dark brown hair that had never been dyed, permed, or styled with heated instruments. The buyer, who had been willing to go as high as six fifty, paid in cash. Erika

immediately rushed to the dealer she had known since high school and spent her entire windfall on pills.

Story Profile– The Two-Line Note

Story Profile– The Two-Line Note

The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories, Part XLII: Further Untold Cases (1894-1922) features mysteries that are referenced in the original Canon, but Doctor Watson never got around to writing them up into full stories.  My story, “The Two-Line Note” is based on a reference to “The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton,” about how a very brief document spelled the ruin of a noble family when it fell into the hands of a ruthless blackmailer.  My editor, David Marcum, keeps a list of references to untold cases in the Canon, and informed me that I’d uncovered a new one that wasn’t on the original list!

Story Profile– The Servant Girl Annihilator

Story Profile– The Servant Girl Annihilator

In the new Belanger Books anthology Sherlock Holmes: A Year of Mystery 1886, a baker’s dozen of stories explores some mysteries Holmes investigating during that year.  One for each month, plus a bonus story.  My story, set in January, is based on the real-life serial killer known as “The Servant Girl Annihilator” who terrorized Austin, Texas during the mid-1880’s.  In real life, the writer O. Henry wrote about these baffling crimes.  In my story, O. Henry writes to Holmes from Texas and asks for his advice solving the crimes.  Aside from introducing Holmes, I stuck to the facts of the case.  But in the best traditions of O. Henry stories, there’s a twist ending…

Online Escape Room Review– Virtual Escaping

Online Escape Room Review– Virtual Escaping

As part of my series of reviews of escape rooms, I’m going to review a company that specializes in online escape rooms.  Virtual Escaping produces several themed games that puzzle fans can play whenever they like.  Unlike some virtual escape room, you don’t have to set an appointment, you just have to purchase a voucher for the game of your choice.  You can play alone or on a team of six (actually, more people can play if they share a computer).  There’s a flat rate for the games– you pay the same amount whether there’s one player or six.

There are five games at Virtual Escaping, with one on the way.  Artifact Isle, is a treasure hunt featuring a lost diary that takes you to a puzzle-filled deserted tropical island.  Detention takes you to a mysterious dream world when you doze off during punishment at school. Expedition North Pole is set in a polar laboratory where you must discover a secret behind the research.  The Saloon revolves around a Wild West adventure, and Underground Murder has you solve a crime on the subway.  Merlin’s Castle,  a magical adventure, is coming soon.  Some of the games will take more time than others (Merlin’s Castle is set to be the shortest at sixty minutes, others range from seventy-five to one hundred minutes.  The puzzles range from easy to challenging.  There’s a built-in clue guide in the games– if one gets really stuck, one can get hints and then the answers to the puzzles.

I have played two of the games, Artifact Isle and Expedition North Pole.  Artifact Isle was a fun collection of puzzles.  The game requires the player to jump back and forth around the island, which means that different players can have very different images on their screens at any given points.  Moving around can be time-consuming, and perhaps a little tedious, but once you get into the rhythm of the game, you can figure out the logic behind the puzzles pretty easily.  I needed to use a couple of hints early on just to get into the minds of the game developers, but after that point my team and I were able to sail through the puzzles with few problems.  There was one glitch in the game, where we had the right answer, but for whatever reason, it didn’t take, so we had to force it by using the clue system to move us forward.  Otherwise, it was a fun, relaxing puzzle experience that we were able to solve in much less than the prescribed amount of time.

Expedition North Pole was much more challenging.  The gameplay was simpler, and far more of the puzzles involve mathematics.  I found it to be a much more frustrating experience, though we were still able to solve the game in time with plenty of hints.  It required close reading of a journal, and certain items on the screen required you to click one of a very limited number of pixels.  My advice is to save this one until you play at least one or two of the other rooms, and to be prepared for more number-related puzzles.

The graphics in Artifact Isle are decent– nothing super-realistic, but certainly on a par with the puzzle computer games I played in the 1990’s, probably a few steps up, really.  Some of the beach scenes are quite nice to look at, and there’s some decent mood-setting lighting in the cave scenes.  The Expedition North Pole graphics are a lot more basic, nothing mind-blowing, and are more early-1990’s computer game level.

If you play as a team, communication is critical.  You can connect via video, but as you’re looking at different things much of the time, and sometimes it can be disconcerting when one of your teammates snatches up an item and puts it in your inventory before you can even get a good look at it.  My advice, take notes and always tell your peers what you’re doing before you do it.

Fans of collaborative puzzle games should give Virtual Escaping a shot. If you’re interested in playing a game from Virtual Escaping, please click this linkhttps://virtualescaping.com/?via=chris.  It’s a special link designed just for me as part of their affiliate program.  I’ll get a 30% commission on any games you purchase from their site if you use this link, so if you’re interested, please make sure to use the link with ?via=chris the end of the URL.

Thanks, and happy playing!

The New Issue of Mystery, Crime, and Mayhem is Out!

The New Issue of Mystery, Crime, and Mayhem is Out!

The latest issue of Mystery, Crime, and Mayhem has been released!  It’s available in both hard copy and Kindle editions.  The theme of this issue is “Betrayal.”  The stories in this issue all revolve around being betrayed in various ways, though the stories are very different.

I have another true crime essay in this one: “Erle Stanley Gardner and “The Court of Last Resort”” which talks about how the legendary mystery writer and his friends launched a crusade to clear the names of wrongly convicted people and reform the criminal justice system.

Also, I have another Funderburke and Kaiming novella, “The Leather Jacket of Doom,” narrated from Nerissa’s perspective.  When the ex-boyfriend of one of Nerissa’s students dies suddenly, the detecting duo start digging around, and soon wonder if the teenager was killed with a poisoned article of clothing.

And my name is on the cover!

One more bit of news: She Ruined Our Lives is now available in paperback!

She Ruined Our Lives, the next book in the Funderburke & Kaiming mystery series, was released as an ebook this Tuesday!  The paperback edition will be released soon.  It’s the second book in the Funderburke and Kaiming series.  While the first book, Ghosting My Friend, was narrated by Funderburke, this one is told from Nerissa Kaiming’s perspective.  It’s the story of a family torn apart by addiction and financial strain, and a little girl who worries that her mother may have taken murderous action to solve her problems.  It’s up to the detecting duo to find out the truth of the matter, but the deeper they dig, the darker the secrets get…
